It all started a couple of years ago when I walked the SURTEX show for the first time upon the advice of a licensed artist. It was a fabulous but overwhelming experience - there was so much beautiful art and so many diverse styles to look at!

People were very friendly and while talking to several of them I was given great tips and encouragements to start my own body of work and exhibit at the show. I was fascinated and inspired by each person I talked to so I started to interview them for my blog, the now popular The Moon from My Attic.

It has been an amazing learning experience since the beginning. I started off in art licensing with an agent and it was a good experience because it made me realize that I wanted to be driving my own business and that no one would be better than myself to effectively market my own work.

So here we are, two years later and I just had my first exhibit! It was very exciting and fun - I launched studio•Alex with my new logo and we had a wonderful show! SURTEX is the market place to develop partnerships and to forge long-lasting relationships with clients. It is also a great place to meet up with other fellow artists and business people.

For the past few months I just worked on preparing for SURTEX and it has seemed like a non-stop marathon. From marketing, to booth design, to building more collections (are there ever enough?!), to client research, to assembling promos and materials…wow, it is easy to get overwhelmed. However, the show is only the start. The after-show follow-ups are as important to continue building the relationships started at the show. In essence, the exciting work of art licensing never stops!

See you all next year!
