eBook Helps Artists Unlock the Mystery of Art Licensing Contracts and Gain Confidence in Deal Making

(Portland, Oregon) November 11, 2011 - Many artists struggle with negotiating art licensing deals because they either fear making a mistake or they don’t fully understand how licensing contracts work. Two industry veterans – Artist Tara Reed and art licensing agent Maria Brophy – have teamed up to write an eBook designed to help artists navigate the often confusing world of licensing contracts and gain confidence in their negotiating and deal making.

How to Understand Art Licensing Contracts offers a thorough introduction to the many facets of art licensing contracts and the reasons behind them. The book will serve to educate artists new to the industry and serve as a reference for those already licensing their work.

The 173-page book covers the following topics:

• A look at the two sides to every contract (artist and manufacturer) and goals of each
• Common contract fears (and how to overcome them)
• Red flags to watch out for in an art licensing contract
• The anatomy of an Art Licensing Contract – breaking down each section with examples of what they mean, why they are important and how it could impact the deal
• How to negotiate a contract and get what you want
• How to determine royalty rates and advances
• How to put yourself in the driver’s seat and take charge of your business

Included are anecdotes from ten artists who share their contract success stories and words of warning as well as insights from five attorneys who work in the art licensing field.

“Understanding the contracts involved in licensing my art was the biggest learning curve I had when I started – and I learned some tough lessons by making mistakes. Hopefully this book will help others avoid similar pitfalls.” explains co-author Tara Reed.

Maria Brophy agreed; “Most people don’t have the time it takes to learn about licensing the hard way. We are going to save artists years of experience with this information. To my knowledge, there is no other resource like this available.”

The eBook is now available for purchase at http://www.ArtLicensingInfo.com/contracts.html.
